Unemployment hits 10.2% for October. What's behind that number?

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today that the unemployment rate jumped to 10.2% in October, the highest figure since April, 1983.  Of the 190,000 jobs lost, the largest losses were in construction, manufacturing, and retail trade.

Ford introduces inflatable seat belts

Ford announced today that they will be bringing inflatable seat belts to the new generation Ford Explorer next year, an industry first.  The new generation Ford Explorer goes into production next year.  The inflatable seat belts will be for back seat passengers.  According to Ford’s news release, children and older passengers are particularly vulnerable to injuries caused by traditional seat belts.  Read more

AARP and AMA endorse Affordable Health Care for America Act

Hard to believe with all these attack ads stating that seniors are going to be left in the cold or euthanized with the current health care reform proposals, but the AARP and the American Medical Association have endorsed the Affordable Health Care for America Act (H.R. 3962/H.R. 3961), which is the bill introduced by House Democrats.  Read more

Iowa Department of Public Health confirms H1N1 in cat

The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) and the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) issued a report yesterday warning that the H1N1 virus can be spread to some animals.

A 13 year old house cat was diagnosed with H1N1 by the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center at Iowa State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine.   Two family members were suffering from flu like symptoms prior to the cat becoming ill.  The cat and both humans have recovered from the virus. Is Bono of U2 fame an environmental hypocrite?

Bono has been campaigning with Al Gore for the past few years raising awareness about global warming.  Bono’s humanitarian work is well known and he is to be applauded for it.

Bono is currently on tour with U2 on their 360 Tour.  U2 announced a goal on their web site of “Net Zero Emissions“.  In doing so, U2 created a web site to encourage ride sharing to cut down on carbon dioxide emissions for concert goers.  Recycling programs will also be set up at tour venues.
