Is Bono of U2 fame an environmental hypocrite?

Bono has been campaigning with Al Gore for the past few years raising awareness about global warming.  Bono’s humanitarian work is well known and he is to be applauded for it.

Bono is currently on tour with U2 on their 360 Tour.  U2 announced a goal on their web site of “Net Zero Emissions“.  In doing so, U2 created a web site to encourage ride sharing to cut down on carbon dioxide emissions for concert goers.  Recycling programs will also be set up at tour venues.

Sounds good so far, right?  The stage for U2’s 360 Tour is so large that it requires over 100 semi trucks to transport to every stop.  Considering that the average semi truck gets about 5 miles per gallon,  the tour’s impact on the environment is very detrimental.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t go to a concert for the stage.  I go to enjoy a performer’s music.  In fact, I prefer going to smaller, more intimate venues to enjoy concerts.

U2 is contractually obligated to finish their current tour.  Maybe Bono will exert some environmental leadership with U2’s next concert tour is planned.
