National Marriage Week USA 2011
After reading the weekly ads in the Sunday Denver Post to allow myself time to enjoy my morning coffee and wake up, I picked up the Business section. Today’s Business section contained a full size ad promoting National Marriage Week USA. Since I am recently divorced from a short, but volatile marriage, the ad piqued my interest.
According to their website, National Marriage Week USA is celebrated from February 7th to February 14th every year, coinciding with Valentine’s Day. Their aim is a “collaborative effort to encourage many diverse groups to strengthen individual marriages, reduce the divorce rate, and build a stronger marriage culture, which in turn helps curtail poverty and benefits children.”
They make The Case for Marriage here, which is the long version of some of the points made in their full page ad,which you can download here if you missed the ad in your Sunday paper.
If you’re currently in a happy marriage, their statistics will solidify your faith in marriage. If you are not in a happy marriage, you might take issue with the statistics. As a recent divorcee, it reminds me that I did not have much of a marriage at all. I am actually much healthier now, both physically and emotionally, as well as happier. I am definitely not a pessimist on the institute of marriage. Quite the opposite, in fact. I am now much stronger and wiser as a result of my recent divorce. I missed many signs that I was about to marry a werewolf, compulsive liar, and a fraud. That will not happen again. It is my sincere hope that I will join the ranks of the tens of millions of happily married Americans someday soon.
